diffusing essential oils
You get as much benefit from inhaling the vapor of the essential oils as when you absorb it through your skin. Diffusing essential oils in the air, or breathing their smoke, is a very effective way to absorb the active ingredients of a plant.
I read that the body absorbs essential oils the fastest through inhalation (breathing) and second fastest through applying it to the feet or ears. Testing on the thyroid, heart, and pancreas showed that the oils reached these organs in three seconds.
essential oils in nature
In the book “Healing Oils of the Bible”, David Stewart says:
“Among the pleasant, rejuvenating things we like most about being closer to nature are the smells of plants—the perfume of the honeysuckle, the smell of fresh grass, or the soothing fragrance that wafts from the needles and bark of cedar, juniper, spruce, and fir. All of these aromas come from essential oils, broadcast by plants as their means of communication between themselves, the animal kingdom, and people. Perhaps a lesson to be learned from the story of creation in Genesis is that God intended that we live in an environment permeated with the gentle scents of essential oils.
“Scientifically, we now know that these natural aromas are more than just pleasant. They are emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and physically healing. God has imbued the aromatic molecules of plants, not only with the power to heal us when we are ill, but to nurture and preserve our health when we are well just by breathing them—even in minute quantities. Even when the fragrances of the flowers and trees are too faint to be detected by our sense of smell, the molecules of oils are still in the air, administering therapy to us. When we dwell among nature, we are continuously inhaling essential oils, twenty-four hours a day, whether we are aware of it or not.
fumigating with essential oils
“Releasing aromatic molecules into the air by smoke was a common way of administering the healing powers of essential oils in Biblical times. In Numbers 16:46-50 Aaron stopped a plague among the Israelites by fumigating their encampment with vapors of frankincense, galbanum, onycha, and myrrh. Fumigating with essential oils such as these could kill a virus or stop a bacteria. When Aaron ‘ran into the middle of the assembly’, because there were hundreds of thousands of Israelites, it probably took days, or maybe weeks, for Aaron and his sons to distribute the therapeutic fumes to every tent, dwelling, and campsite of the congregation. However long it must have taken, it was effective. The plague was stopped, along with the death.
smudging with essential oils
“The midwives of Biblical times used a variation of smudging during childbirth. Hot coals were placed under the beds or birthing stools of laboring women. Myrrh and other oils were poured on to create a cloud of perfumed smoke around the mother. This was supposed to assist in keeping her calm and focus during delivery and to ease the stress of labor.
When you buy incense you want to make sure you buy incense that is made with natural fragrances from herbs, flowers and essential oils without glue so it’s non-toxic.
diffusers
There are some very fancy (and expensiv
e) diffusers you can buy. I just have a couple inexpensive ones that I’ve enjoyed using…
This diffuser has been real handy and the battery lasts a long time. You put a few drops of an essential oil on a little pad inside and turn the fan on. My kids and I enjoy using peppermint, as it’s very uplifting and makes you more alert. The little stand that held this up broke off, but I still like just holding it up to my nose and taking a few deep breaths…it smells so good!
For Christmas a friend gave me this snazzy little USB diffuser. I put a drop or two of oil on the “X” and it warms up and smells so good. I like to use lavender, as I think it’s my favorite smell, although I like a lot of the smells and some I like better at different times.
I got this nifty little stone diffuser at Walmart. You put some filtered water in the little bowl on top with a few drops of essential oil. Then you light a little tea candle inside and it warms up the water and oils and makes the room smell so nice! My favorites to use in this diffuser are patchouli, pine, orange and frankincense.
And of course there’s incense. Natural resins, gums and herbs have been burned as incense since ancient times for its spiritual, medicinal/healing, fragrancing and odor-masking properties. Inhaling the fumes of burning aromatic plants or incense brings the molecules of essential oils into our system quite effectively.
The word “perfume” comes from the Latin “per fumum” which means “through smoke”. “Fume” is from the same root and originally referred to the aromatic vapors of smoldering oil or incense from a censer. “Incense” is mentioned 68 times in the Bible.
